Feeling Anxiety This Winter? According to a New Survey,
You're Not Alone
Expert Offers Tips for the Nearly Half of U.S. Adults Combating the
Winter
Doldrums
NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 5, 2007 The post-holiday season can produce a feeling of fullness and warmth
-- but not for all. For many, this time is often the darkest of the
year as winter has settled in for a long, dreary stay.
Anxiety Rules!
One of the ways to fight and possibly cure anxiety is through the use
of vitamin, mineral or herbal supplements.
Today's Featured Article:
Do you experience unnecessary fears with raging heartbeat and/or
difficult breathing? Are you daydreaming or imagining something
catastrophic to happen, have scary thoughts like seizure, heart attack?
Are you often worried about your own or loved one' death or feel an
impending sense of doom? Getting into panic whenever faced by new problems
or new situations? Are you afraid and going crazy? Are you excessively
nervous at times, have difficulty in concentrating; have stomach problems,
dizziness or uncontrollable sweating? It is likely that you are suffering
from anxiety disorders and getting "anxiety attacks". Anxiety All people

In fact, a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive(R)
on behalf of Nature Made(R) MoodPlus(R) SAM-e(1) has brought
confirmation to many U.S. adults' suspicions: winter blues are not a
myth. Nearly two thirds of U.S. adults (64 percent) agree that they are
usually in a better mood during the summer than the
winter. Additional findings from the Nature Made
MoodPlus SAM-e survey provide further insights into this gray season
including: * Stress Increases: About
half of U.S. adults say their stress
levels increase approaching the
holiday season (53 percent). * Finding Comfort
Helps: When adults' moods are low, many try to
lift their spirits by spending
time with friends and/or family (57
percent), going out (51 percent),
or exercising (43 percent). * More Women are
Affected than Men: Nearly half of women (47
percent) said they often
experience the blues during the winter months,
compared with 39 percent of men.
Watch the Anxiety Factor!
What does this mean for Americans combating a
case of the winter blues? Registered dietitian Deralee Scanlon suggests
that the survey findings offer hope to those looking forward to a
happier winter. "It is encouraging to learn that about half of adults
engage in healthy activities. While it may seem more difficult to stay
active during the colder months, it is vital to our physical and mental
well-being." For an extra boost, Deralee recommends
incorporating a natural mood lifting supplement to help lift low winter
moods. S-adenosylmethionine, better known as SAM-e, is a naturally
occurring compound produced by the body and found in all living cells.
Clinical studies show a direct correlation between low levels of SAM-e
and low mood. Deralee asserts that not all SAM-e supplements are
created equally: "I personally recommend Nature Made MoodPlus SAM-e
because it is the brand used in most American-based clinical
trials." Deralee also advises eating mood-boosting
foods during the season known for overeating: "Certain foods, like too
much saturated fat, can lower mood, while super mood foods, such as
fish rich in omega 3s, foods high in protein and leafy green
vegetables, can help combat winter blues." Ultimately, Deralee
encourages adults to make a personal goal to get plenty of exercise,
eat a well-balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables, spend quality
time with loved ones and try to get outdoors to make sure you
are getting enough sunlight.
Deralee always
recommends consulting with a health care professional first to develop
a personalized strategy for combating low moods. For more mood-boosting

Methodology This survey was
conducted online within the United States by
Harris Interactive on behalf
of Nature Made between October 16 and October
18 among 2,384 adults (aged
18 and over). Figures for age,
sex, race/ethnicity,
education, region and household income were
weighted where necessary to
bring them into line with their actual
proportions in the
population. Propensity score weighting was also used to
adjust for respondents'
propensity to be online.
With a pure probability sample of 2,384 one could say with
a ninety-five percent
probability that the overall results would have
a sampling error of +/-3
percentage points. Sampling error for
data based on sub-samples
would be higher and would vary. However,
that does not take other
sources of error into account. This online
survey is not based on a
probability sample and therefore no
theoretical sampling error
can be calculated.

ATLANTA, Feb. 13, 2007
Atlanta-based
Tikvah
Therapeutics,
Inc. has signed
a licensing
agreement with
Therapade
Technologies
LLC, a
drug development
company founded
by researchers
at the Emory
University
School of
Medicine and the
College of
William and
Mary, for
worldwide
rights to
develop and
commercialize D-cycloserine
and related
compounds for
the treatment of
numerous
anxiety-related
disorders,
including
post-traumatic
stress disorder,
panic disorder,
social phobia,
obsessive
compulsive
disorder (OCD),
as well as other
afflictions
exacerbated by
anxiety. Tikvah
Therapeutics
will also
explore
additional
indications for
D-cycloserine
through its own
research and
development
efforts and the
support of
further
investigator
initiated
clinical trials.
D-cycloserine, a NMDA receptor partial agonist, is currently
approved
for other uses,
but is expected
to be used at a
substantially
lower dosage
in the treatment
of anxiety
disorders. Drs.
Michael Davis
and Kerry
Ressler
of the Emory
University
School of
Medicine and
Yerkes National
Primate
Research Center
conducted
preclinical
studies that
demonstrated
D-cycloserine
helped reduce
fears faster,
leading to the
eventual
disappearance,
or "extinction,"
of the
fear(1,2). Based
on the results
of
these
preclinical
studies, a
clinical trial
was initiated by
the Emory
University
School of
Medicine in
which acrophobic
patients were
given a low
dose of D-cycloserine
or placebo,
administered in
conjunction with
psychotherapy.
The results of
the study showed
that patients
receiving
D-cycloserine
required an
average of 75
percent fewer
psychotherapy
sessions to
reach a defined
clinical
endpoint of fear
reduction
compared to
the normal
course of
therapy in other
studies.
Importantly, the
patients
treated with D-cycloserine
also exhibited
increased
self-exposure to
real-life
fearful
situations
compared to
those treated
with
placebo(3,4).
Additional clinical proof of concept studies have
demonstrated the
potential
benefits of D-cycloserine
in treating a
variety of
anxiety
disorders
including Social
Anxiety Disorder
(SAD)(5) and
OCD(6), amongst
others(7).
"The use of D-cycloserine in treating anxiety disorders, such
as
phobias, appears
to have
significant
clinical
implications --
namely its
potential to
augment
psychotherapy
and enhance
learning," said
Dr. Harold
H. Shlevin,
President and
CEO of Tikvah
Therapeutics,
Inc. "The
licensing
of these
compounds fits
nicely with
Tikvah
Therapeutic's
risk reduction
and
commercialization
strategy."
Tikvah Therapeutics is compiling an investigational new drug
application (IND)
for D-cycloserine
and expects to
file the IND
with the
U.S. Food and
Drug
Administration
in 2007. Related
compounds
licensed as
part of the
agreement with
Therapade
Technologies
include a
variety of
other modulators
of the NMDA
receptor and
various
combination
products.
"We are pleased to have licensed the D-cycloserine technology
to Tikvah
Therapeutics,"
said Dr. Michael
Davis,
Co-Founder of
Therapade
Technologies
LLC, Robert W.
Woodruff
Professor in the
Department of
Psychiatry and
Behavioral
Sciences at the
Emory University
School of
Medicine and a
scientist in
residence at the
Yerkes Research
Center. "The
company's
experienced
management team
is committed to
seeing this
compound through
clinical
development and
into the hands
of the millions
of individuals
suffering from
anxiety
disorders."
About Tikvah Therapeutics
Tikvah Therapeutics focuses on exploring new uses for already
approved
pharmaceutical
compounds in
which new
therapeutic uses
have been
confirmed
in multiple, new
clinical
proof-of-concept
studies. This
strategy
shortens
product
development
timelines -- in
some cases by up
to seven years
-- and
substantially
decreases the
risk associated
with the
research and
development
efforts. A
second prong of
its strategy is
to focus on
specialized
products with
multiple
stepping-stone
indications and
strong
patent
protections for
the new uses,
thus helping to
ensure
manageable
commercial risk.
Tikvah's pipeline includes Phase II compounds such as an
agent
initially
targeted to
treat
neurodegenerative
diseases; D-cycloserine
and
other NMDA
receptor
agonists for
treatment of a
variety of
anxiety
disorders; and
multiple other
products under
consideration.
About Therapade Technologies LLC
Therapade Technologies LLC was formed by Drs. Jason McDevitt,
Michael
Davis and Kerry
Ressler to
pursue
regulatory
approval for the
founders'
proprietary
therapeutic
methods for
treating and
curing anxiety
disorders
and other
related medical
conditions(8).
